Im September 1973 verschwindet der Sohn des amerikanischen Geschäftsmannes Ed Horman (Jack Lemmon) in Chile spurlos. Mit seiner Schwiegertochter reist Ed nach Santiago und macht sich auf die Suche, die von den Behörden offensichtlich behindert wird. Als es Ed gelingt in das Stadion von Santiago zu gelangen, wo die politischen Häftlinge zusammen gepfercht werden, findet er den Leichnam des ermordeten Sohnes und nimmt ihn mit in die USA, deren Verstrickung in den Putsch gegen Präsident Salvador Allende der Film nach und nach enthüllt.
