　武则天当皇后以后，首先便拿自家兄弟开刀。武则天的两个同父异母兄弟在武则天父亲死后，对武则天母女很不好，使两人受尽欺凌。武则天当了皇后之后，几个兄弟也都沾光升了官。不料，武氏兄弟并不买账，觉得他们当官是因为是功臣之后，现在靠亲戚关系升官，并不感到荣幸。武则天马上抓住机会，向李治上奏本，把武氏兄弟贬完偏远之地，树立了自己贤德皇后的名声，而朝中大臣也对武则天刮目相看。武则天为宣扬自己的功德，又特意撰写了《外戚诫》，提出要约束外戚，防止历代出现的外戚之祸，让大唐长治久安。武则天的威望一下子得以提高。
