在户奴赵道生的挑拨离间下，李贤和武则天的矛盾进一步加深，他终于决定要造反了，并想出要扣留天皇李治和太平公主作为人质的妙计。武则天震怒，派兵马包围东宫，搜出五百套盔甲兵器，便把李贤逮捕。武则天没想到儿子竟然想谋反，哀痛之余决心严惩，李治伤心欲绝，躲到了太平观。武则天也痛哭失声，但还是表示要大义灭亲。武则天于是下令把李贤废为庶人，赵道生等人一律处斩。在行刑的时候，武则天亲至刑场，将从东宫搜出来的五百套盔甲当众烧毁，以警示朝野。李显被册立为了太子，李显移居东宫。此时李显和韦莲儿相遇并相爱，李显更是给武则天带回来能使容颜常驻的药方。
