为了应对如此强大的敌人，秦基伟更加坚决和坚定地让部队在上甘岭上大修坑道，但是在实际的工作当中却出现了问题。为了彻底解决战士们的思想问题，参谋长张蕴钰提出让八连和一连进行挖坑道比赛。双方为了得到军部的奖状，一改以往的状态，拼命投入到挖坑道的工作当中。段显峰为了改进工法，还尝试帮八连用炸药开坑道。在新工法的加持下，八连本来赢得了比赛，但由于联合国军的轰炸，刚开好的坑道被炸塌，遗憾落败。在三兵团副司令王近山视察坑道时正好遇到联合国军轰炸机轰炸，一枚航弹落在了八连的阵地上却没有炸。段显峰利用自己过硬的军事技能成功拆除航空弹，受到了王近山的表扬。人民志愿军第十五军45师知道哨所被炸后，立刻命令情报处长刘向阳带着情报参谋杜文锦重建观察哨。杜文锦和刘向阳上山的路上正好遇到联合国军例行轰炸我军交通线。在这里，他们看到段显峰因为早就掌握敌军轰炸规律，提前组织群众躲避。杜文锦的战友为了救危险中的朝鲜群众不幸被弹片击中，段显峰和杜文锦都竭尽全力想救战友，两人有了第一次见面。联合国军的频繁动作引起了秦基伟的警觉，他找到兵团副司令王近山提议奇袭391高地。
