七十年代初，昆仑军区来学校招兵。同学们都踊跃报名。袁鹰、丁浩天、吕强、方扬都报了名，接兵的连长文凯看袁鹰体质弱，不让她报名，因为昆仑山上实在是太艰苦了。袁鹰回家就缠着父母亲想办法，父亲袁有生是刚刚被解放的老干部，他同意给女儿找找人。文凯来拜访袁有生，带来了一封信。袁有生和妻子翠莲看见信大吃一惊，以为韦铁锤违背了当年的承诺。袁有生和翠莲得知袁鹰要去的正是韦铁锤的部队，不让袁鹰当兵了。
