甄宓责曹丕激发了曹植的斗心，使相争彊局更难打破。教场上，曹丕试验新制箭头，一矢中的，时曹植骑马出现并于马上发箭射穿曹丕射的箭，以示争胜之心，杨修为曹植重新振作而雀跃。曹军为马超率领的马贼滋扰，曹植力主尽速剿灭、曹丕则主谋定后动，二人相持不下，令曹操烦恼，此时徐晃来询问守城军号，曹操随口一句「鸡肋」。杨修闻言后，向曹植及曹彰表示曹操不会出兵剿马贼，华歆责他胡乱猜测曹操心意，其后向曹操打小报告，曹操心有决定。 曹操将曹植、曹丕与众幕僚隔离，以测试二人应变能力，再从中抽出其背后军师。杨修急躁堕曹操的陷阱，曹操指杨修野心太大，借「鸡肋」一事指他扰乱军心罪名治他死罪。荀彧与曹植到狱中，荀彧指杨修罪在锋芒太露，杨修也说今次曹操考验的并非曹丕兄弟，而是自己。曹操极力避开曹植与甄宓，二人却仍得消息前往向他求赦，曹操断然拒绝。 曹操亲往牢房，杨修说早料到他避不过曹植与甄宓，并说自己输给曹操并不代表他赢了，因为还有高人从中作梗，谜底要曹操亲自找寻，曹操心感不安。荀彧送饭到刑场，杨修拜谢他，另边厢曹植舞剑及甄宓弹琴送别杨修，杨修感慨不已。杨修死，荀彧、曹植与甄宓悲痛莫名，曹植阅杨修遗书后更发誓发奋图强。曹操三子一同大婚，曹操于婚礼上宣布曹丕继承世子之位。
